20-year survey of M/Y 'Boadicea' complete

PSY claims year is developing in "best possible way"…

Palumbo Superyachts Marseille, the group’s French Mediterranean coast location, has in three months completed the 20-year survey for a second-time client, of 77m M/Y ‘Boadicea’, in collaboration with Fraser management.

The project encompassed: new hull plating, tank measuring and inspecting, cleaning 17 tanks, welding, metal works to the tank tops, exhaust pipe and plumbing works, painting, teak works and more, and she is now ready for the summer season. Palumbo Superyachts Marseille and Fraser are confident of the yacht’s summer performance which they have predicted will be ‘superb’.

The three-month timeframe of the survey is a great achievement considering, within the paintwork alone, there were more than 150 corrosion spots found under the coating. It was therefore necessary to confine and scaffold the work area, in order to recreate paint shed conditions, with maximum brightness and minimum dust. The fairing of the aft rub rail has also been completely re-faired and repainted.

At The Superyacht Forum in November, we are following the theme ‘Building for the Next Generation’, which will look at future-thinking technologies, including how we can optimise the application of paint to a superyacht, compared to (for example) the aviation industry.

After 20 years of cleaning and sanding the totality of the swim platform, the upper deck aft and forward had to be re-caulked. In total more than 150m2 of teak has been re-caulked - a work of precision and patience to remove the joints present without causing collateral damage.

Ahead of the summer season, Palumbo Superyachts Marseille also took on another refit project on the 35m classic yacht Over The Rainbow built by Dickie & Sons, where they spent four weeks undertaking shipwright works on hull planking, topside painting, shaft line works, varnishing and engineering works. The 1930 vessel is scheduled to return to the shipyard for a major refit.

The Crew Facility revamping process which has been completed in both Palumbo Malta and Palumbo Ancona, is now set to take place at Palumbo Superyachts Marseille. PSY Marseille is currently providing additional crew services to its clients such as rental electric bikes and kick scooters as part of the Easy Move Marseille Project, as well as crew welcome packages and events to explore Marseille’s amenities.

Giulio Maresca, General Manager for Palumbo Marseille, and former captain, said “2019 has started in the best possible way, the shipyard was thriving with activity and the Palumbo team was always on task to support the every need of our clients.” From a business perspective, “So far, the turnover has exceeded what we achieved in 2018 and we feel confident about the upcoming season following the confirmations already received that put us in the favourable situation of rapidly running out of dry-dock and mooring slots”, he continued.

In order to successfully achieve the requests of their international client base, Palumbo Superyachts’ facilities across their five shipyards encompass: a 3,300-ton syncrolift in PSY Ancona, four travelifts capable of lifting up to 820-tons (PSY Savona), a climate-controlled paint watershed (PSY Marseille) and a total of 14 dry-docks spread over the Malta, Marseille and Naples sites.

Palumbo Superyachts will attend the Monaco Yacht Show 2019. For all the latest Monaco Yacht Show News, please see here.

PSY will soon be announcing their official partnership with our upcoming flagship and most attended event, The Superyacht Forum, taking place at RAI in Amsterdam in association with METSTRADE. This year’s theme, ‘Building for the Next Generation’, ensures this will be our most forward-thinking event, To join over 800 delegates and play a role in shaping the future of our industry, tickets are available here.
