The first issue of 2019, published early next month, is full of comprehensive market insight…

It was over 10 years ago, in 2008, that the superyacht market had its record year for new builds. According to the comprehensive research undertaken by The Superyacht Intelligence Agency, 126 shipyards worldwide delivered 267 yachts in 2008, whereas 2018 saw only 54 shipyards making deliveries. This decrease (57.1 per cent) illustrates the changing face of the superyacht new build landscape over the last decade, and how vital thorough analysis is for the growth of market.

In a few weeks, The Superyacht Report: New Build will be published. The report features an unprecedented amount of data on the current landscape of the new build market. This unrivalled insight into the state of the market looks at the 2018 new build landscape in distinctive sections: 30-40m, 40-60m, 60-90m, 90+m, the sailing yachts, as well as cumulative LOA, gross tonnage and yard consistency over the last decade.

The report also proves that, contrary to the unerringly positive rhetoric purported by some, although a strong ‘top tier’ of shipyards has established itself as the industry driving force, the remainder of the new build market is somewhat disparate and inconsistent; it is very much a ‘tale of two cities’.

For this issue’s Industrialist interview, William Mathieson sits with Michael Breman, sales director for Lürssen and president of SYBAss, and Theo Hooning, secretary general of SYBAss. As the representatives for SYBAss, an organisation that represents an elite tier of shipyards that dominate the pages of this issue, these two industry figureheads discuss the significant consolidation of the new build market, and the profile of the market of the future.
