OceanLED partners with REV

Marine LED underwater lighting brand OceanLED has announced its partnership with the Research Expedition Vessel (REV), the largest privately-owned vessel currently in build. REV will be dedicated to scientific exploration and research.
Giles Truscott, director of superyacht & custom projects for OceanLED, spoke to SuperyachtNews to discuss the partnership. “The initial contact was about two and a half years ago,” he explains. “We’re trying more and more to get involved with vessels, designers and naval architects at the earliest stages, and with this project, we wanted to make sure we knew exactly what the owner wanted.”
He adds that OceanLED were chosen for the project due to the team’s experience with polar and extreme environments. OceanLED have admitted there were hurdles to overcome for such a mammoth project, but have found the tests have pushed their technology even further than anticipated. For example, achieving DNV GL’s stringent pressure test requirements with underwater lights exceeding 28BAR / 286 mH2O (metres of water) to achieve 40BAR / 408 mH2O. “DNV GL asked us to test our lights to destruction under pressure, we could have gone further but the gauge only went up to 40 BAR!” reports Truscott.
REV – the brainchild of Kjell Inge Røkke – will be launched in 2020, and according to the REV team, “will assemble international research communities in a joint effort to acquire more knowledge, create more awareness, develop new and sustainable maritime solutions and collect plastic waste.”
