We are all familiar with phrases and acronyms like ISM management, DPA (Designated Person Ashore) and SSAS (Ship Security Alert System Response). At least, the crew and managers of yachts will be!

For the uninitiated or curious, aside from the obvious 24-hour nature of yachting, there are clear legal requirements for those operating a yacht to have procedures in place to ensure that any emergency, whether safety or security-related, is responded to promptly.

This is nothing new. So, what is my point?

I wonder how certain you are of your initial response. What happens if the duty manager misses the call because they are in the shower, or the phone goes dead or out of signal range?

How many yacht managers, large and small, have a robust process in place that captures the initial emergency message, processes it, and then responds according to a preset cascade message system?

A very cost-effective and foolproof way to secure this peace of mind is to outsource this response to a provider with a 24/7 control room. This is not a new concept. Most travel insurers or medical companies outsource their response to professional companies with a global, round-the-clock capability.

This approach can also be expanded to address other out-of-hours problems such as IT failures or system issues. With the correct training, the staff answering these calls can move from simply taking the call or message to handling the initial problem and even solving it.
