There are a number of classic tenders in the market that are true examples of the traditional wooden day boat, or that incorporate the essence of such design and build method, enhancing user experience through fresh interpretation and technology. A manufacturer that has stamped its authority in the market for 170 years, and continues to produce some of the most elegant boats in the world, is Italian manufacturer Riva. However, quality classic builds, such as Riva’s eight-metre Iseo day cruiser, are not restricted to Italian shores. Winning the Best New Powerboat Award at the 2011 Newport International Boat Show, US-based Destino Yachts’ 6.1m Destino 20 is another option for owners to consider.

“What I wanted to do when I started the company in 2010 was to create exclusive custom mahogany runabouts using modern materials and techniques to bring these beautiful boats into the 21st century,” explains founder of Destino Yachts, Ole Nielsen.

The American master craftsman set out to create tenders with a classic look using materials and a building method that would ensure a longer lifespan and better performance for the user. The Destino 20 was the first model based on this philosophy, with a cockpit layout suited to ferrying people to and from a mothership, while remaining powerful and robust for activities such as waterskiing.

Destino 20 nearing full speed

With a Volvo Penta d3-220, turbo diesel engine producing 220hp, connected to a Hamilton jet drive, the cold molded boat can quickly achieve a top speed of 38 knots. “The jet drive offers maneuverability that no other single engine installation can compete with, and the diesel engine is a safe and reliable workhorse,” confirms Nielsen. Guests are kept dry and comfortable thanks to a 20-degree deadrise along with lifting strakes and chine flats on the hull.

Custom made stainless steel fittings

Specific custom cast stainless steel hardware, which has been especially designed and manufactured locally using wax casting, have been fitted to the boat. Destino Yachts also offers the option of having a sun pad towards the aft, above the engine compartment, for added luxury and enjoyment.

The cockpit can take up to five people including the driver

Despite the lack of Italian pedigree, the Destino 20 offers a potential owner a classic wooden boat, which is less expensive than the more established manufacturers in the industry, with an asking price of just below 178,500 euros (USD 219,000). “Of course this is just for the Destino 20, but everything we do is designed and built to order,” says Nielsen. “We sit with our clients and create a boat to their specifications, desires and needs.”
