Athens Marina

Motoryacht Guilty's captain, Mark Souter, gives a rave review of Athens Marina, particularly praising the care given by the marina team, and one of the reasons the superyacht has visited for the past eight years.…

We want to hear about as many superyacht marinas as we can directly from you, the crew, in a bid to find out which is your favourite marina. Another first review is in, and it's from Captain Mark Souter, skipper of 35m motoryacht Guilty.

Why Athens Marina?

The owners of M/Y Guilty and myself chose Athens Marina for the following reasons:

  • Excellent security within the marina, both at the entrance and also day/night patrolling within the complex
  • Very good protection from the predominant summer winds
  • Close proximity to Piraeus workshops and nearby supermarkets, etc.
  • Easy access by car, tram, train and buses to Athens and coastal suburbs, plus it is only 45 minutes to the international airport
  • The berth price was very reasonable and additional consumable charges were not excessive

Marina competition

We also looked at Marina Flisvos, but chose Athens Marina because of the security aspect.

Previous visits

We have visited Greece every year for the past eight years and use the marina as our base for the summer season. On most occasions, Athens Marina tries to give us the same berth each year, which tends to give us a sense of comfort and familiarity, as we know that the moorings are secure.

First impressions

My first impression on entering the inner basin at Athens Marina was, "Wow, this is a super safe place to leave our yacht".

Most impressive aspects

The friendly marina team is without a doubt a major asset to the marina, as they have always responded very quickly to any of our requests. I have telephoned the Marina office dozens of times and often (late at night) with unusual requests, and they have always come good with my particular needs. I was also pleased to see that our hire car could be parked under a sun shelter.

Improvements

My only suggestion is that the crew would have liked a small cafeteria or bar within the premises whereby they could get off the yacht and have some time-out, and meet their friends over a drink.

Future visits

It is our intention to return again in 2017 summer season.

Crew facilities

As mentioned, the wonderful proximity of the marina to nearby Piraeus and all other facilities meant that our crew could have easy access to restaurants, cinema, golf, ferry boats, etc.

Local recommendations

Athens is packed with historical sites and museums, plus the nightlife in Plaka is really exceptional. My crew also enjoy playing golf and the local golf course in Glyfada was able to give our crew a special three-month membership, which made it very favourable for them to play during their time off.

The marina team

We have been treated with much kindness from the marina staff that has made us feel welcome and given us a sense of belonging.

I sincerely recommend Athens marina to any visiting superyacht, whether it is for a brief visit or for an extended winter stay.
