Alex Dreyfoos: Silver Cloud update

Recently, TheSuperyachtOwner.com caught up with Alex Dreyfoos, owner of what is currently the world’s only small waterplane area twin-hulled (SWATH) superyacht, Silver Cloud, for a chat after the yacht’s recent refit at her build yard, Abeking & Rassmussen.
“You might want to stop by to see how nicely our new swim platform turned out,” Dreyfoos offered. “You may also may want to experience the stability that the Seakeeper M8000 gyro stabilizer adds to our new Intrepid 390 Sport Yacht T/T Silver Cloud. You would be amazed at its stability even at dockside.”The yacht’s air conditioning system also underwent extensive changes to counter the effects of the sun as a result of the large windows throughout Silver Cloud. If the sun is on the port side of the boat, the port side rooms require significantly more cooling than the starboard side rooms. A new electronically controlled damper system does the job nicely, Dreyfoos reports.
After the refit works completed, Dreyfoos and his wife spent the summer aboard the yacht in Scandinavia, cruising the west coast of Norway up to the Loften Islands and then Copenhagen, Dansk (Gdynia) Poland, Oslo and Stockholm.
Unfortunately Dreyfoos, had some stateside obligations that preluded his staying for the show, but they will be back aboard Silver Cloud in St. Bart’s from December 14th to 20th , getting off in time for the crew to make the yacht ready for a Christmas Charter with Camper & Nicholsons International.
Dreyfoos, who has sailed literally all over the world in his unique yacht, which is based on a successful A&R commercial platform, originally bought the yacht to enable he and his wife to enjoy his passion for global cruising adventures. “We went to A&R, and went aboard their SWATH pilot boat in seas my wife would otherwise have been sick on,” Dreyfoos said. “She just sat there doing her knitting and reading. Steve Martin and I were racing around the boat trying to learn as much as we could. One thing led to the other and it took about a year to come up with the design and the specifications and pricing. Then we submitted, and 30 months later we had Silver Cloud. And, believe me, it has not disappointed. We’ve had guests aboard almost all the time. Nobody’s ever been sick on the boat. Ever.”
