The Superyacht Captains' Forum: Refit White Paper

The Superyacht Refit White Paper will form the basis of discussion at the event…

On 21st March, during the Yachting Aftersales and Refit Experience (YARE) in Viareggio, Italy, superyacht captains and industry professionals from around the globe will gather at The Superyacht Captains’ Forum to analyse the state of the market through a series of powerful discussions, seminars and challenging data that accurately portrays the state of the market.

To accompany this year’s edition of The Superyacht Captains’ Forum, the open discussions held at the 2018 edition of the event have formed the basis of The Superyacht Refit White Paper, after The Superyacht Report collaborated with a spectrum of industry stakeholders over the last 12 months to produce publicly-available guidance document on best practice for the delivery of a major superyacht refit.

This curation of instructional texts and internal guidance documents (available to download here), are segregated over three distinct sections: Pre- refit, The Refit Period and Delivery.

"A successful refit project requires substantial amounts of planning, time, energy and resources. Regardless of the reason for the refit, experienced owners, along with their captains and their management firms, know the details of these projects are often complex. Detailed planning, communications and management of expectations is critical to successful completion."

‘A successful refit project requires substantial amounts of planning, time, energy and resources,’ the report states. ‘Regardless of the reason for the refit, experienced owners, along with their captains and their management firms, know the details of these projects are often complex. Detailed planning, communications and management of expectations is critical to successful completion.’

In light of the myriad variables within a refit project, such as the time management and negotiation process, the issues highlighted within white paper, will form the basis of discussion during The Superyacht Captains’ Forum, including the The YARE Debate, which will highlight what captains and managers really think of the process. Here, Sam Thompson of JMS Yachting, Feargus Bryan of Edmiston, Terry Allen of MacFarlane Design and Capt Malcolm Jacotine of 360 Marine will discuss pressing operational matters.

‘[A] factor critical to a successful refit is communication – liaising effectively with the owner’s team and providing regular progress updates,’ says one contributor to the white paper. ‘It is absolutely essential to be able to get a rapid response from the owner’s team in order to avoid unnecessary downtime.’

With communication so critical to the process, it is clear that both absorbing the white paper and attending the discussion session at YARE will benefit anyone involved in any stage of the refit process.

The guest list for this event is limited to Captains, Yacht Managers and Chief Engineers, subject to availability and approval from YARE.
