Red Ensign Group focuses on crew welfare
Looking more widely at the wellbeing of crew and an owner’s duty of care will be a priority for the REG in 2020…
The Red Ensign Group (REG) is aware of the increasing incidences of crew facing mental-health and well-being issues. The challenges of being away from home, long hours and a lack of socialisation are all believed to add to the pressure on crew.
The Isle of Man Ship Registry is pioneering the REG’s work to address crew welfare, starting with addressing the problems caused by a lack of socialisation and a lack of access to resources, as well as practical design considerations.
“The REG has the technical capability to work with yacht builders on practical design solutions to make accommodation more conducive to the mental well-being of crew working on board,” says Cameron Mitchell, director at Isle of Man Ship Registry. “It’s also about encouraging our owners to develop innovative solutions to improve the crew’s surroundings and facilitate access to available resources on physical and mental well-being.”
The REG wants to encourage owners to create a space where people actually want to work and live. “Not only is this a moral obligation, it also makes good business sense to care for the crew’s well-being," adds Mitchell. “Increased levels of well-being will improve crew retention and enhance the reputation for the yacht, owner and the Red Ensign.”
