MYBA Charter Show cocktail competition

The MYBA charter show is presenting its first cocktail competition for up to 10 yachts…

At the 2017 edition of the MYBA Charter Show, the MYBA Art in a Glass competition will be making its debut, on Tuesday 24th April. Designed to inspire interior crew to take a step into the world of mixology, while providing a unique opportunity for budding mixologists to demonstrate their creativity and talent.

While there have been plenty of mixology competitions in the past, its more common to see them in conjunction with others, such as the annual PYA Mixology competition at the Monaco Yacht show, which is part of the PYA’s Table Setting competition. Now with its own competition, the MYBA Art in a Glass lends credence to the growing popularity of mixology.

The competition allows for just 15 minuets of cocktail preparation, in which contestants must make one cocktail three times, one for each of the judges. The cocktails must include six ingredients (not including ice and garnish), one of which must be a minimum of 40ml of Tanqueray No. 10 gin, which is supporting the event.

All drinks must be prepared in front of the judges, and may be hand stirred, hand shaken or built in the glass. MYBA has clarified that the cocktails may be served straight up or over cubed, cracked or crushed ice. Taste, originality, presentation, appeal of the name, guest experience and delivery are the basic criteria that will determine the winners. And the source of inspiration: the new location of the show – Spain.

Former crewmember Jasmin Rutter, who is now Diageo’s (owner of some of the world’s most prominent drinks brands, including Tanqueray No. 10) brand ambassador for the superyacht industry, with a particular focus on supporting interior crew by giving them the confidence to create top quality cocktails for owners and guests on board. Yachts wishing to register for the competition will need to get in touch with Jasmin at Jasmin.rutter@diageo.com, who is also available for any additional questions about the competition.

“These events are valuable to crew as it is a creative outlet,” says Rutter, talking exclusively to SuperyachtNews. “It’s also an opportunity to work as a team and create something to be proud of. It’s a great confidence booster and a great way to educate yourself about spirits.” Also a social occasion, Rutter explains that the competition is a great place to meet fellow crewmembers and share ideas.

“I truly believe that excellent cocktails on board superyachts go hand in hand with the luxury and exclusiveness of the industry. Most crew enjoy drinking amazing cocktails, but often don’t have the confidence to make them for guests,” continues Rutter. Having the ability to make a cocktail well is a fantastic skill on board a superyacht, making you an even more valuable asset aboard your yacht.

“Art in a Glass is an opportunity to learn and propel forwards with confidence. Just as in the luxury hospitality industry, in the superyacht industry, cocktails are on the rise. It is, after all, what guests expect and therefore is of huge importance to interior crew.”
A maximum of 10 yachts will be able to participate in the competition and registration is now open, with further details here.
