World’s largest superyacht launches at Lürssen

'Project Azzam' the 180m motoryacht has launched at Lürssen, making it the largest on the water today. …

A piece of superyacht history has been made, with the launch of Project Azzam, at Lürssen in Germany. The 180m motoryacht is now officially the largest in the world.

The team behind this remarkable yacht was assembled by engineer, Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi. It comprised Nauta Yachts, responsible for Azzam’s exterior design, Christophe Leoni who created her interiors and Lürssen, which supplied technical engineering.

She steals the crown from 162.5m Eclipse as the largest yacht in the world. She has also achieved a record-breaking build time, says Lürssen.

"When she will be delivered later this year, she will have been in build for only three years following one year of engineering," said Peter Lürssen, managing partner.

"She truly represents another milestone in not only our history but yachting history as well."

Saad al Ahbabi was also responsible for the original concept of the yacht including her general layout, performance, exterior style and size.

His brief was to build a large luxury yacht with an 'innovative and timeless' design that would be able to travel at high speed in warm and shallow waters. It would also have to provide luxurious and sophisticated accommodation to its guests.

"When I first saw the scale model before the general presentation to the Principal, I was 100% happy with the outcome and so was the Principal. Such recognition made me confident that we had achieved our goal," said Nauta CEO, Mario Pedol.

The design has a ‘sense of purpose, yet a timeless elegance’, incorporating all the elements of a ‘visionary contemporary modern design’.

As would be expected of her interiors, the scale of her social spaces are considerable. Her main salon comes in at over 29m and she has a beam of 18m with an open plan and no pillars.

She features a turn of the century Empire style which her French designer undertook to realise. Christophe Leoni said of the project:

"Though Yachting is not my main area of business, I thoroughly enjoyed the cooperation with Nauta and Lürssen and am confident that the final yacht is everything and more the owner expects."

Her owners’ technical consultants were Burgess, whose CEO Jonathan Beckett commented:

“We are proud to be associated with this extraordinary and unique project.”

“The construction of this yacht - with its highly complex technical features - has been extremely demanding and challenging. It has been a real team effort between all the professionals involved including ourselves, the builder and the designers.”

Azzam can reach speeds over 30 knots, and is powered by a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines with a total of 69136.88 kilowatts.
