Wild Group partners with German specialist Färben

Superyacht vinyl wrapping firm Wild Group International has announced a new marine specific fabrication partner, German foil maker Färben. …

Wild Group International, the superyacht vinyl wrapping company that has continued to attract attention for its innovative and unconventional approach to vessel surfaces, has formally announced a new fabrication partner, German foil maker Färben.

Färben, which is based in Germany, is a specialist in vinyl wrapping for the automotive industry.

Working with Wild Group, Färben has developed a marine-specific product that is thicker than previous wrap foils. But its key feature is the high-gloss and high-durability finish, previously unavailable in a vinyl wrap.

“Previous to the launch of Färben, we have had to say, ‘if you want high gloss you have to paint it,’ Greg Hoar, director of Wild Group has said.

“But Färben’s Extreme Gloss series in particular has a higher gloss and DOI reading than the paint equivalent so we can now offer a superior finish which is great for our customers.”

The Färben clear coating surface makes them tougher while offering greatly increased gloss, durability and scratch resistance, Hoar has said.

Working with Wild Group, the Färben films have been developed with a tough acrylic urethane coating which is tougher and higher gloss than foils previously available, and takes light buffing.

According to Hoar, until now, all foils and films had been made for the automotive industry; experience has shown that for the marine market they needed to be thicker and harder wearing.

“These foils have have been designed specifically for the marine environment, with a 100-micron thickness (normal films are 50-70m) offering excellent resistance to weathering and chemical attack.”

“We are delighted to be the first approved fitters of the Färben foils and films,” Hoar has said.

“It’s fantastic that these new films are coming to the market: they have been specified on most of the range at the Sunseeker factory, and they can be seen at the London Boat show.

Färben has supplied Wild Group with a colour-matched battleship grey for 68m MY Aviva which is currently undergoing a full hull wrap at Rybovich in Florida.

Hoar has said that as vinyl wrapping of yachts has gained a place within the superyacht industry, inexperienced businesses have started to 'give it a go.'

“We felt the need to work with a company like Färben that would only supply to approved fitters in order to keep the standard high within the industry,” he explained.
The colour matching process and manufacturing for a custom Färben foil wrap takes a minimum of eight weeks, but Hoar says he expects standard colours such as black and oyster white to be readily available in the future.

“We always used to refer to paint to achieve the deep high gloss finish but with the arrival of these Färben foils, we’re confident that they now represent a visually superior option, and one that is harder-wearing as well.”
