'Stella Maris' is launched in Viareggio

Despite being too large for the Viareggio yard in which she was built, 72m 'Stella Maris' has been launched by Viareggio Superyachts from a military facility in La Spezia. She will be premiered at the forthcoming Monaco Yacht Show.…

Stella Maris, at 72m the largest superyacht ever to be built by Italian shipyard Viareggio Superyachts (VSY), has finally been launched following a series of logistical challenges for the yard caused by her size.

In the absence of any suitable structures to facilitate the launch of the biggest yacht ever to be built in Viareggio, VSY had to transfer her by barge to a military facility in La Spezia.

Here she was floated into the large dry dock, which was then drained, leaving her resting dry on the barge positioned on the tank bottom.

At the end of the launching ceremony the dry dock was then flooded again, thus enabling the vessel to take to the open sea on her own and return to Viareggio the same day.

Stella Maris has been designed by Espen Øino and Laurent Giles Naval Architects, and features staggered internal decks, an original form of bow, certified helideck, a sundeck that converts into an entertainment space, and a large beach area near the water, as well as having house-plants spanning the deck. Her interior has been commissioned by Michela Reverberi.

She is 10m larger than the shipyard’s two 2009 constructions, the 62m Candyscape II and RoMa, and will be 8m larger than the shipyard’s current project, the 64m Duchess of Tuscany II, expected to launch in 2013.

VSY is now busy carrying out sea trials and completing the outfitting before her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.
