The New Heirlooms
Down a small side street in Clerkenwell, a real hub for design in London, English upholsters Fleming & Howland unveiled two new furniture designs and launched a new range of colours at its new showroom...…
SuperyachtDesign particularly loved the latest colour bone, a unique shade that is a result of months of development by the in-house colouring specialist. A distressed, modern off-white, bone has to be skilfully applied in the workshop during the hand-dying process to ensure that the colour isn’t contaminated by any other dyes. Another new colour, parchment, is a complex mix of charcoal with a cream base peaking through, to create an antiqued, faded effect. Finally, powder blue and rose, which are also unique to Fleming & Howland, act as a fresh and feminine contrast to the more masculine shapes of the new furniture.
Most masculine of the new designs is the Tank chair. According to Fleming & Howland, this version of the iconic art deco chair reflects North America’s Streamline Moderne era, which was influenced by aerodynamic designs. This is solid chair that will really dominate a space and make a statement, with its oversized armrests and deep cushioning. Less dominating, but still following in Tank’s retro footsteps is the Belvedere chair. Designed in house, the Belvedere combines a fluted back with a traditional chair frame for a subtler nod to the art deco era. Available in an array of colours, it looked particularly striking in the bone leather in the showroom, with the black mahogany and antiqued chrome studs really highlighted by the paler leather.
Each piece is handmade to order at Fleming & Howland’s Heirloom workshop in Ramsgate, Kent. “Our small highly skilled team of specialists have worked really hard on the latest colours and designs and I am absolutely thrilled with the results, which I predict will be a big success,” comments Paul Fleming, managing director and the fourth generation of his family to work at Fleming & Howland.
Fleming & Howland will be showcasing the new collections at Clerkenwell Design Week, 24 to 26 May 2011.
