Combining two of SYD’s upcoming focuses, metal and dining space, Marcel Wanders’ Drain Table for Cappellini is an aluminium sculpture for the dining room.

Produced entirely in turned aluminium sheet, the swirling metal appears to gravitate towards the vortex in the centre of the table. Wanders emphasises the importance of learning about materials, understanding what they can do, how they are produced and how they are processed. It is through this understanding of his materials that he is able to create objects like the Drain Table that are a perfect mix of handcraft and industrial technology. Offered in polished base colours of white, red and anthracite, the table has a transparent glass panel enclosing the conical hole in the centre of the table. Simple, playful and stylish, this piece would add a touch of fun to the dining experience.

Born in Boxtel, the Netherlands, Wanders co-founded Dutch design house Moooi. He has collaborated with many furniture companies over the years, including Authentics, Flos, Magis, Mandarina Duck and Salviati, creating pieces that are notable for their lightness and delicacy.

For more on dining space, see Q5, which is out now. Materialist will explore the world of metal in Q6, which is out April 2011. To subscribe to SuperyachtDesign and receive future issues of the quarterly magazine in stunning hardback, click here.
