Tearing Up the Rulebook

Sanlorenzo CEO, Massimo Perotti showcases the SL102 Asymmetric…

“If you don’t take risks in life, you don’t get anything”, so said Massimo Perotti on day two of The Superyacht Design Forum. And as CEO of Sanlorenzo, one of the world’s most prolific superyacht builders, he should know.

Perotti is a true frontiersman, having challenged the conventions of yacht design his whole career.

And this year is no different, with Perotti presenting the soon-to-be-launched SL102 Assymetric, a revolutionary planing creation, that is three-and-a-half years in the making, and a collaboration with revered automotive designer, Chris Bangle.

What’s so captivating about this design is that the asymmetry, which features a full-beam portside and a passageway running the length of the starboard side, is that it is a tangible design innovation, borne out of an operational challenge. The challenge in question is affording privacy to guests on a small vessel, while ensuring the crew can operate efficiently. And the outcome of this problem-solving exercise is sublime.

“With Chris Bangle, we broke the rules”, Perotti explained. “You’ve got to break the rules of rigid boatbuilding.”

This is something Sanlorenzo achieves time and again, and is made all the more impressive on this occasion because it has been achieved on a production vessel. As his presentation at The Superyacht Design Forum proved, there is potential to push the boundaries at every level of the size spectrum.
