Spirit Yachts to build 42m J-Class
UK shipyard Spirit Yachts is collaborating with Sparkman & Stephens to build a 42.4m J-Class superyacht. 'Cheveyo' will embody the elegance of 1930s yacht design while using 21st century construction methods.…
Cheveyo, who has been commissioned by a US-based syndicate of investors and sailing enthusiasts, will be built to the Ranger 77B design, following an in-depth survey of all the original Burgess and Stephens J-Class lines in the Sparkman & Stephens library.
Her design will be a combination of the 1930s, what Spirit Yachts has called “yachting’s golden era,” and modern build techniques of the 21st century.
Chairman of Spirit Yachts Kevin Felix said the yacht is “reminiscent of the historic America’s Cup competition between England and the United States. From design through construction to eventual competition with her peers, Cheveyo will espouse history.”
Her stiff and lightweight hull will be built using wood/epoxy construction, as well as the use of laser cut stainless steel ring frames. Bruce Johnson, president and chief designer of Sparkman & Stephens, commented: “By utilizing the wood composite construction technique that Spirit Yachts has perfected over the years, Cheveyo will break from the current norm of modern Js’ aluminium construction and return to a more historically accurate construction method, albeit with the use of modern epoxies and laminating techniques to maintain a light-weight structure.”
Felix concluded: “There are no two firms better suited to realise Cheveyo than Sparkman & Stephens and Spirit Yachts. We could not be happier with this partnership and the opportunity for Spirit Yachts to place its imprint on this classic J.”
The construction of Cheveyo is due to begin this coming autumn, with a scheduled launch date of winter 2014, and scheduled delivery date of spring 2015.
