SP-High Modulus launches improved prepreg

SP-High Modulus has launched the SE 84 Nano, a hot-melt epoxy prepreg that incorporates 3M Matrix Resin.

SE84 Nano is comprised of nano particles which are dispersed within the matrix, enhancing the ability of the resin to provide stability and support to hold the carbon fibres in column. This directly translates to higher properties, particularly in resin-dominated compression. It has been specifically developed for the marine industry, where compressive performance is a key requirement.

When vacuum bag moulded, SE 84 Nano exhibits a 20 per cent increase in compressive strength, when compared to the SE 84 LV product. This is due to the characteristics of 3M Matrix Resin which has nano particles dispersed within an epoxy resin. This resin forms the base of a proprietary SP-High Modulus catalysed prepreg matrix showing the processing and handling benefits of SE84LV while boosting mechanical properties.

SE 84 Nano is designed for use on components such as dagger boards, bulkheads, fixing plates and hull inner skin. When considering structures that have a strength-driven design such as rudders, keel structure, mast and keel bulkheads etc, the higher compressive strength of SE84 Nano will provide a direct benefit in terms of weight saving for the same strength, or conversely a strength increase for similar weight. When designing stiffness-driven components, the benefits are lessened but increased strength can provide local benefits in terms of ease of design and providing higher strength without compromising stiffness. In most applications, the product delivers some function of performance or safety gain according to the designer/owner’s choice.

Graham Harvey, General Manager of Marine at Gurit commented:

“With the launch of SE 84 Nano SP-High Modulus is able to offer customers a high-performance prepreg that can offer a significant increase in compressive strength over our comparable prepregs. We expect that this product will benefit designers, engineers and builders of sailing boats at the cutting edge of performance, who could seek to use SE 84 Nano to achieve lighter parts for the same strength or a strength bonus for stiffness-dominated applications.”
