Simrad launches Halo pulse compression radar

Simrad Marine Electronics, a subsidiary of Navico, has launched the new Simrad Halo Pulse Compression Radar (Halo). Combining the characteristics of traditional pulse and broadband radar systems, the Halo radar uses pulse compression technology to deliver a system that provides a mixture of close and long-range detection, target definition and minimal clutter.

Unlike traditional pulse radars the Halo does not use a high-powered magnetron (vacuum tube) to transmit. The Halo radar uses solid-state electronics to produce low-power pulsed frequency-swept transmissions, therefore avoiding the associated warm-up time, power consumption and the electromagnetic emissions of traditional pulse radars. Compliance with the upcoming Low Emission standards ensures Halo is safe to run in anchorages and marinas.

Halo delivers long-range performance comparable to traditional pulse radars, but what differentiates Halo from traditional products is its ability to produce clear short-range images for impending collision hazards, where previously only broadband systems would be effective within this range. The HALO-6 Radar’s six foot array provides a maximum range of 72nm and a six metre minimum range.


Brushless solid-state technology means no motor brushes or magnetron to replace, and no need for manual tuning as the magnetron ages and diminishes. Other features include, beam sharpening, target separation, dual range operation, target, weather, oil spill and bird detection, MARPA target tracking, five usage modes with automatic harbour/offshore selection, high speed mode, 16-26 seconds start up time, low power consumption and Ethernet connectivity.
