Siemens improves upon its EcoProp system
Siemens has produced an improved solution to its existing Siship EcoProp hybrid propulsion system. Before now it was only compatible with engines up to 20kW per shaft.…

In order to better facilitate the system’s application to yachts of 50 metres and above, the current system has been developed and reconfigured. The configuration is as follows: One per shaft line electrical permanent magnet or asynchronous machine is mechanically coupled via gear box to diesel engine and shaft. In a twin propeller arrangement the two electrical machines are electrically connected to the converter board. The mains side of the converter, consisting of the active line module takes care of all relevant safety functions of a generator. The system is suitable for single operation as well as for continuous parallel operations with one or more diesel generators.
For a configuration with 2 x 600 kW hybrid power the total length of the converter board including water cooling circuits and the complete control will not exceed 4 meters. Depending on the requirements of the ship construction, standard marine machines up to innovative permanent magnet machines can be used.
The following modes of operation are supported:
1. E- Mode: The ship will be driven by the E- Machine only. This mode enables the captain operating the ship in slow speed with less noise for example during night. This mode will significantly reduce wear and tear to the Main engines as they will be used only if cruising or full speed is needed.
2. Boost Mode: The ship will be powered by the main Diesel engine and E- Machine to reach full power output to the propeller. Based on the overall concept, the use of this mode may allow the installation of a smaller main Diesel engine at similar total power output to the shaft.
3. Generator Mode: The Ship is in cruising condition and the necessary ship consumers can be fed by the main engines; no auxiliary engines are necessary.
4. Cross Connection mode: This mode will increase the redundancy as both shaft lines can be operated even in case of failure of one main Diesel engine.
