Renk Marine's innovative gear system for superyachts

RENK AG, part of the MAN Group and a provider of marine gear system solutions, has produced a reduction gear system for use aboard superyachts. The system has already been installed in a 90-metre vessel, where four RENK BSL 2x130/140 reduction gears operate in a combined mode to control four engines. Each gear is compatible with engines up to a power output of 4,320kW.

This two-stage reduction gear arrangement has been designed and manufactured in accordance with the latest in gear system technology. Consequently, all main gear meshes are double-helical designs and refined to the highest level of accuracy, resulting in high overlapping ratios, whilst reducing noise levels.

All main shafts are supported by sleeve bearings and the gear casings are mounted on specially designed RENK hard elastic mounts, for additional structure-borne noise reduction. The input shafts are equipped with RENK multi-disc clutches, which ensure a smooth and safe acceleration of the Controlled Pitch Propeller shaft line.

RENK has also introduced a newly developed thrust bearing, which is attached to the gear, accommodating a more compact design. This Advanced Thrust Bearing (ATB) includes elastomer elements, isolating the structure-borne noise and simultaneously preventing penetration through the thrust shaft, bearing casing and further into the ship’s foundation.
