Monaco Yacht Show 2019: Design

Design is a subject of magnitude at MYS, and a vital contingent to the entire event…

For the design community, the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) provides the ultimate platform to not only showcase new design projects, but to acquire inspiration, gauge new trends and seek out potential collaborations. While I may be biased toward the subject of design, it is a subject of magnitude at MYS, and a vital contingent to the entire event.

When it comes to international debuts, there is no better time or place to present a new concept than MYS, each year we look to seek out the latest project to really steal the show, and I’m more than confident that the yachts out on the water will not disappoint. Taking centre stage on Quai Rainer Ier, one of Lürssen’s latest behemoths, 111m Tis, will be at MYS this year, undoubtedly turning heads. Designed entirely by Winch Design, the yachts interior is truly remarkable, featuring a double staircase that belongs in a palace and staterooms that are hard to believe are on board a yacht.

There is always a level of excitement when seeing new projects for the first time, especially when they are from the boards of design greats and executed through pioneering approaches to naval architecture and design. One of these, that many attendees will be keen to see is M/Y Bold, Designed by Espen Øino and built by SilverYachts. The new destroyer-style utilitarian superyacht has been designed to tackle more rugged climates, which has been reflected in the yacht’s angular exterior.

But the show isn’t only about the newest projects on the water, there are some really interesting projects returning to Monaco this year, which have been reworked and redesigned. This year, 45.2m M/Y Golden Eagle, which is currently listed for sale with Y.CO for 4,950,000 USD, will be at the show, featuring an updated interior by Tino Zervudachi. Having completed a multitude of pioneering design projects, such as London’s National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Opera House, Zervudachi’s approach to design here is centred on the real lifestyle on board a superyacht, with a light, simplistic and textured design in order to encourage a relaxed feeling on board.

For designers, the show holds such vast potential as a platform for new designs and opportunities that are hard to come by in any other scenario. In a recent interview with Igor Lobanov, he explained he barely had a second to eat when he showcased the model of his White Knight during the show, and it proved to be such a huge part of his entry into the superyacht market.

MYS holds a huge opportunity to some up-and-coming trends that have been becoming increasingly prominent in the last few years.

MYS holds a huge opportunity to some up-and-coming trends that have been becoming increasingly prominent in the last few years. I’ll be keeping a very close eye on projects that favour a more toned-back style, which is a lovely trend that many designers and clients are leaning towards.

There really is an incredible number of things to look forward to from the design perspective at the 2019 edition of MYS, and I’m sure that those in attendance won’t be disappointed.

Don’t miss The Superyacht Business Report, which will be present at MYS this year.
