Lloyd's Register launches three new checklist apps
Lloyd's Register and UK P&I Club have launched the Marine Fire Safety, Marine Pollution Protection and Port State Control Protection applications.…
Robert Brindle, LR’s lead specialist on Port State Control, commented: "The seafarers of today were calling out for a paperless solution that was portable and interactive. These apps allow us to update users when new legislation comes into force, helping to ensure they’re in compliance with the latest regulations. Their success only helps to reinforce LR as the highest performing Recognised Organisation in the Paris MOU region for the rolling three-year period 2011-2013."
The Marine Fire Safety Pocket Checklist shows 32 items where deficiencies are commonly found, 30 certificates and documents that must be present on board and 15 tips to aid international compliance. The checklist has been divided into specific areas of the ship, so each member of the crew can take responsibility for the area in which they have been put in charge. Interactivity allows crew to check off completed activities, make new lists and add notes and images to the application, all of which can be shared via email.
The Marine Pollution Prevention Checklist highlights the common areas cited by the MARPOL Annexes as causing deficiencies. Legislative and regulatory conventions and requirements are all easily accessible and interactive. The Port State Inspections Pocket Checklist highlights the common causes of detention in an equally interactive format and helps captains and crew to reduce the risk of their yacht being detained.
Karl Lumbers, the UK Club’s loss prevention director, said: "Over 20,000 downloads of the first two apps seems to indicate these type of apps are welcomed by the industry. We therefore hope by turning the remaining checklists into apps we will be able to distribute the advice further, make data collection easier and hopefully reduce the risk of our members having claims."
There are now five LR application checklists, of which the original two are rated in the top 10 mobile apps for maritime professionals.
