Livewire Connections installs complete communication system on 70m superyacht 'Talisman C'

Livewire Connections has supplied and installed a complete satellite communications and IT network onboard the 70m superyacht Talisman C with a team of dedicated in-house engineers.

Though launched in August 2011, David Walker of Livewire Connections shined light on why the company felt it important to wait until now to release details of the installation: “We wanted to allow time for the yacht to go through sea trials and enter service. It’s one thing to just complete a project, but another to still have a happy customer after four to five months in service.”

The 70m motoryacht was built at Proteskan Turquoise Yachts shipyard in Turkey under project name ‘NB-53’. Designed for world-cruising it was essential that the systems onboard were able to deliver robust and reliable connectivity in any location.



Livewire Connections has installed two Sea Tel 6004 TVRO systems with an arbitrator to eliminate mast blockage, and two Sea Tel 6009 VSAT systems with the latest dual antenna arbitrator to allow a single modem to operate efficiently with two antennas. The larger 1.5m antennas provide extra gain that is required for yachts exploring remote parts of the globe to ensure that even on the edge of satellite coverage a good connection is maintained.

A variety of back-up communication systems are also available via the Livewire Access Controller FB-10 should the VSAT service become unavailable, which then provides access to the internet via Inmarsat Fleet Broadband, 3G, shore connection or port Wi-Fi. The FB-10 also allows for the management of internet bandwidth by prioritising owners and guests over the crew as well as monitoring each user’s throughput.

Talisman C was fitted with the latest Dell PowerEdge and PowerVault Servers running a full domain environment with Livewire Mail, as well as a managed internal WLAN system which allows users to roam with laptops and iPod without losing connectivity.

“This installation project has gone extremely smoothly with excellent co-operation with the shipyard and the owner’s build team. It is very pleasing to see all the hard work and effort result in such an elegant and well equipped yacht,” commented Tom Cecil, project manager for the build process.
