Lateral Naval Architects and Oceanco partner TSDF
The Superyacht Design Forum announces support of two leading industry brands…
Two leading superyacht brands have partnered with The Superyacht Design Forum, held from 26 - 27 June in London. Oceanco and Lateral Naval Architects have announced their support of the event, taking place at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour.
As detailed in The Superyacht Annual Report 2018: New Build, Oceanco has three projects currently in build, all over 90m. Its status as a leading, innovative shipyard was cemented with the high-profile delivery of 107m S/Y Black Pearl earlier this year. At the event, Derek Munro, the owner’s representative for the project and the technical manager for the yacht, will take part in a discussion about technological advancements of energy systems on board, and the future of hydrogen fuel power cells.
Lateral Naval Architects is the result of a strategic collaboration between Oceanco and BMT Nigel Gee. Oceanco and BMT first started collaborating in 2008, with the two brands developing technology for superyachts over 100m.
The formation of Lateral Naval Architects, between the British naval architecture firm and the Dutch superyacht builder, was announced last month. In a statement to the press, newly appointment managing director James Roy explained the motives behind creating this new collaboration. "Lateral is a joint venture between our two companies that will deliver to the market more than the sum of its parts.” Roy has spent over a decade within the yacht division of BMT Nigel Gee.
“Lateral and Oceanco are excited to sponsor The Superyacht Design Forum,” he said, in a conversation with SuperyachtNews. “Engaging with the design community via the forum is a valuable part of understanding how we best engineer and deliver our work to enable the maximum creative freedom for the industry.”
The Superyacht Design Forum will take place on 26 and 27 June at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour in London. This event comprises two days of thought-provoking workshops focusing on business, technology, creativity, style & interior and sustainability. The event has been formulated to not only educate the industry about pertinent issues for owners, designers, shipyards and subcontractors, but also draw on best practices from other industries.
Highlights include an open shipyard and designer Q&A with Ken Freivokh, Ken Freivokh Design; Steve Gresham, Gresham Yacht Design; Stephen Hills, Pendennis Shipyard; Justin Olesinski, Olesinski Ltd and Ronno Schouten, Feadship / De Voogt Naval Architects. There will also be a fireside chat with legendary sailing yacht designer Philippe Briand, a case study with Sanlorenzo CEO, Massimo Perotti and an instructive seminar with superyacht lawyer John Leonida, Clyde & Co, to discuss the importance of designers protecting themselves and their designs. Lateral Naval Architects will be leading a session entitled ‘Lateral Thinking’, where James Roy will be discussing the company’s vision, as well as its aims to push the boundaries of traditional naval architecture.
Speakers from outside the superyacht industry include renowned ‘futurist’ Matthew Griffin, who will be using his experience as a leading R&D developer for technology companies worldwide to see what disruption can bring to the superyacht market. A number of leading residential designers will go head-to-head with superyacht designers in ‘Constructive Criticism’, to discuss the different spheres and see what each other can learn from the different fields.
