Stemat Marine Services launches 'Lars'
The 36.4m explorer vessel, 'Lars' has been launched amid arctic conditions at Stemat Marine Services in the Netherlands. The superyacht was finished at Stemat, with prior work conducted at Balk Shipyards.…
The former seagoing tugboat was originally constructed for purpose at Made in Holland but was never completed. At the end of 2010 the project was resurrected as Balk Shipyards set out to convert the tug into an ice-classed explorer yacht, to be built to MCA classification and under the British Virgin Islands flag.
However, due to over-capacity at Balk, and what exterior and interior designer Felix Buytendijk called, “a very tight building and delivery schedule”, the project was moved and subsequently finished by Stemat Marine Services, the site of its launch.
According to Buytendijk Lars, “will be delivered to the owner in <arch 2012, and leaves for [her] maiden trip to Spitsbergen in April…afterwards [she] will remain available in northern waters for charter.”
With naval architecture by Herman Jansen Holland, Lars accommodates eight guests and five crewmembers. Capable of a top speed of 13 knots, she has a range of 6420nm at 10 knots. She has a draft of 2.8m and a beam of 7.8m.
Although launched in spectacularly challenging conditions, Buytendijk highlighted the irony: “It was a tough and very cold day, where only Lars, as an ice-classed yacht, was in her habitat.”
