The SuperyachtDESIGN Week programme would not be complete without the opportunity to question the creative minds that drive new thinking and ideas in the superyacht arena. SuperyachtDesign editor Andrew Johansson takes a look at some of the works achieved by designers Evan K Marshall, along with Frank and Bas Mulder.

The Designer Q&A sessions are a great opportunity to hear from experienced designers about delivering projects across the size spectrum and to learn the most successful ways to manage client expectations and demands.

The first of the two sessions will be held by Frank Mulder and Bas Mulder on the first day of SuperyachtDESIGN Week (SYDW) at 15:00 in Summit’s showroom on the third floor of the North Dome.

“It’s always great to meet everybody in the industry,” explains Bas Mulder when questioned about the appeal of the event. The naval architect explains that while there are many interesting workshops in the programme, unsurprisingly it is the sessions focused on the technical elements of a project that capture his attention. “SuperyachtDESIGN Week is a good way to keep current on trends in our industry and to learn from, and be motivated by, powerful speakers.”

Delegates have over an hour to engage with the naval architects about the various projects the studio is working on including John Staluppi’s new 69m Spectre under construction at Benetti. Responsible for all the naval architecture on the project, Spectre is the ninth superyacht the Dutch studio has worked on for the owner and is the first to feature a new stabilization system developed for the project.

“It is not our invention but rather the way we use things that Naiad has used before and combined these with things we needed anyway,” explains Frank Mulder in an interview about the project in our sister publication The Superyacht Report Issue 172, out in the beginning of July.

In addition to Spectre, Mulder Design is working on a 68m, 60m, a 32m explorer, a 22.8m fast custom yacht, a 22.8m and 17m production yacht, and last but by no means least, Quintessence Yachts' AM37 in collaboration with the design team at Aston Martin.

At the same time on Wednesday 29th, Evan K Marshall will stand in the spotlight to discuss current projects, common stumbling blocks in the design process and how best to manage client expectations. Among the studio’s projects under construction is a 50m sailing yacht in build in Bodrum, Turkey, a 38.1m motoryacht and a 13.7m outboard boat at Ocean Alexander, and 39.6m Serenity — part of the Noble Star series — nearing completion at IAG. Alongside this, the studio is working on a new 60m explorer concept in collaboration with Vripack, an 25.9m production yacht for Ocean Alexander, as well as a series of high-rise buildings in Moscow, tapping into Marshall’s training as an architect.

“It is always fun to discuss the business with people who share a common interest and to impart some of my experience and knowledge,” says the American about what he is looking forward to at this year’s event before imparting advice for those new to SuperyachtDESIGN Week. “Take the opportunity to expose yourself to as much of what is happening as possible. Even if it is somewhat out of your particular field of interest, there is an opportunity to learn and see a lot of new things both inside and outside of our industry.”

The Designer Q&A sessions are a great opportunity to learn from leading designers in the superyacht industry, discover new tricks of the trade and to put forward the questions you've been dying to ask.

SuperyachtDESIGN Week 2016 will be held from 28-30 June at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. To view the the full programme, click here, or to register for the event, click here.
