Horm Outdoor Collection
Contemporary Italian furniture brand Horm has debuted its outdoor collection. Designed and inspired by two architects that have worked for several years with the company, Toyo Ito and Steven Holl, the pieces use a unique African wood to great effect...…
Launched at Salone del Mobile in Milan, the collection uses okumè, often known as gaboon wood, which is an African wood with unique outdoor qualities. The okumè tree actually absorbs sand from the ground into its roots, which then settles in the wood’s veins and prevents damp from rising. One of the pieces also features Lecce stone, an ancient material that was used by the Romans to build a number of Dolmen and Menhir sculptures in Salento. This attractive stone has subtle amber tones that alter over time to become the colour of rich honey.
Both pieces in the collection would look just as at home inside as they would on deck. Designed by Steven Holl, Hexagon is a system composed of two modules that can be used as seats or tables and can be placed side by side to create interesting arrangements and patterns. Each piece is an truncated pyramid with hexagonal base made of Lecce stone and white or black painted metal or okumè wood.
The original Ripples bench created by architect Toyo Ito has been given an update for the collection, becoming Ripples Outdoor. Developed by Horm designers and technicians in tribute to the work of the Ito, the bench is a reflection of the already iconic object and, thanks to the effect of okumè wood, conveys the delicate poetry of Toyo Ito’s work.
