Exploring the design of the Amels Limited Editions, one of the most successful semi-custom lines in history…

With 40 superyachts out on the water since the concept was introduced in 2005, the Amels Limited Editions range is one of the most successful semi-custom lines in superyacht history. The triumph of the original exterior design by Tim Heywood has resulted in stratospheric deliveries figures for the design studio and Amels. But now, the Limited Editions has been shaken up once again, as the shipyard revealed the next generation of Limited Editions last year, which has already proven to be a great success.

Contributing to the most deliveries in the 50-60 size category, Amels delivered 20 yachts in the last decade. The success of the shipyard’s Limited Editions range is evident here, having been originally designed by Tim Heywood, who is correspondingly, the designer with the highest output of exterior projects for the decade.

Tim Heywood’s Limited Editions designs have become iconic in the modern yachting era, and originally based on the idea of building six yachts in six years. “I was fortunate that they asked me to design their first Limited Editions range back in 2005,” says Tim Heywood. “This first design proved to be very successful. Being able to bring the knowledge I have gained in the 100m plus design work I have done back down around the 50m mark, I believe has worked very well.

From the design perspective, Amels has delivered the perfect balance between custom and semi-custom yachts, presenting owners with a tried and tested platform, which is diverse enough to entice a range of owners and flexible enough for them to have an input into the interior design. Looking at the Heywood series of Limited Editions, there have been ten different interior design studios involved. Italian design studio, Laura Sessa Design has collaborated on the highest number of Heywood Limited editions superyachts to date, having completed 17 of the yachts’ interiors.

The new Limited Editions Amels 60, was officially unveiled in the lead up to Monaco Yacht Show 2019, the Amels 60's impressive exterior design has been created by Espen Øino International. “The Amels 60 is a package that no-one else can offer at this time,” says Espen Øino. “It’s a very well thought-through design where we incorporate all the experience Amels has as a builder and we as designers. I think it is truly a design that reflects the future.”

The new design itself is quite different from its predecessor, and adds more of an edge to the range. With design cues such as the triangular windows and angular hull, the new design certainly provides a modern solution to the iconic series and one which, I’m sure, will continue to be well received in the market.

This is the second time Amels has collaborated with Espen Øino, after the 78m full custom superyacht currently under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2021. Prior to the official unveiling of the new project, the Amels 60 is the result of three years of extensive research between the in-house Damen Research Laboratory, the Amels design team and Espen Øino International.

To date, the Monegasque design studio can boast an outstanding portfolio of work, which is at a similarly stratospheric level as Tim Heywood. According to The Superyacht Agency, Espen Øino International has completed 56 superyachts, and has a completed the exterior designs of 11 superyachts currently under construction around the globe, five of which are scheduled for delivery this year.

Since the Design of the new Limited Editions 60m superyacht was introduced seven months ago, two units have already been sold, which indicates that already the new project has been met with an outstanding response.
