Stephen Huish Yacht Design, based in Greater London, has revealed a new space saving sun lounger, which when not in use folds into a neat rectangular shape, freeing up valuable deck space.

“The design for a folding sun lounger came about some years ago when designing the aft end of a 38-metre motoryacht,” recalls principal designer and founder, Steve Huish. “The client wanted a flexible solution for entertainment. Due to the limited space on this size yacht, the idea came about for a stylish lounger, which could be halved.”

Stretching a total of 2150mm, with a width of 890mm, the lounger was originally to be made from teak but further development of the product lead to the possibilities of creating carbon fibre or reconstituted bamboo versions. The latter alternative would be 100 per cent biodegradable, perfect for the environmentally conscious owner. When folded, the lounger occupies a total length of 1150mm with an unlimited stacking number, subject to the construction material chosen.

Although construction has yet to commence on the lounger, the studio is at the early stages of negotiation with a handful of manufacturers, with the option of designing a small collection of furniture. “Additional products for the design include a tray, which can be inserted on top of the sun lounger when stacked to create a table – thus allowing the product to have a secondary use,” concludes Huish.
