Drop Table

The limited edition Drop Table by Brit Insurance Design Furniture 2011 nominee, Junya Ishigami, is a clear table with a twist, as it distorts the image of what lies beneath, creating a similar effect to that of looking in a pond. “The Drop Table, as a sculpture of pure aesthetics and clear poetry, distorts the perception of space and changes the distances between objects like a mirage,” says manufacturer, Living Divani.

Ishigami, founder of Junya Ishigami & Associates, has created the table by using cast GS Plexiglas for both the top and the legs, with the top produced as a result of a complex manufacturing process that takes over 30 hours, using a five-axis numerical control machine. As part of the construction process, two rough-hewing and three finishing operations are performed by hand in order to achieve the high quality and distorted look. However, the legs are made using CNC technology, inserted into the machine and positioned differently each time in order to create the different angled effect, and then hand polished.

Ishigami’s most interesting designs include the 10-metre long steel Table, with an unltra-thin oscillating top and the Balloon, a large aerostatic balloon, which was presented at the 2007 Space for Your Future exhibition at the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art.
