Daring to dream

The latest issue of 'The Superyacht Owner' includes stories from the brave and the unstoppable. After a refit of fisheries vessel, the owner of 'Enigma XK' is ready to cruise the world's most inhospitable regions and ex-Microsoft Office owner imagines a world where remote control technology on yachts would be simpler. Ahead of Monaco Yacht Show, we also produce the definitive list of unmissable superyachts.…

It is easy to get distracted during show season. The combination of the hectic bustle, sales pitches and glamour that is unique to boat shows can quickly mean productive meetings and remaining focused on what you want to get out of the industry, is difficult.
With this in mind, The Superyacht Owner has not only put together a list of yachts not to be missed at both Fort Lauderdale and Monaco, but also compiled a mix of owner stories, practical advice, destination guides and opinion pieces to educate, inspire and help you refocus and reevaluate.

From beautiful new builds to epic refits, the road to ownership can vary drastically. Peter Lürssen and Dan Lenard take Don Hoyt Gorman around the 86m, palatial-looking new build Quattroelle. In a rare in-depth look at a brand new Lürssen, TSO reports on the extraordinary levels of detail that we’ve come to expect the German yard and the refined Nuvolari Lenard design.

Hardier but no less beautiful, Enigma XK, former fisheries vessel Norna, has undergone a major refit to fulfill her owner’s wish that she be capable of going to some of the world’s most inhospitable places. He tells The Superyacht Owner of his plans of conquering the great rivers of West Africa, Brazil, Canada and beyond.

Manfredi Catella (on the cover), CEO of Hines Italia, the real estate company founded by Gerry Hines, owner of Lady B, tells European editor Justin Ratcliffe how, like his mentor Hine, he has a passion for sailing, but actually prefers for the close contact with the water and hands-on nature of dinghy sailing to sipping champagne on board a superyacht as a guest. Owner Hank Freid tells us how being hands-on with the hiring process is important to him and ex-Microsoft boss and owner of Skat Charles Simonyi tells us why he’s frustrated with some of the options for remote technology on board yachts today.

With the superyacht landscape constantly changing, new marinas and destinations are emerging to meet the new or anticipated demand. Long-time sleeping giant China has started to stir and is opening up to superyachts. Angela Audretsch investigates what developments the region has made and whether it is even ready for superyachts yet.

Back in Europe, we look at Barcelona’s Marina Port Vell, which, after extensive upgrades, is ready to emerge from its chrysalis as a fully-fledged, six-star superyacht marina. Proving that yacht clubs don’t have to be kept to the sun-drenched coastlines, Gstaad Yacht Club proves that you can combine nautical and mountain cultures extremely well in the idyllic village of Gstaad, Switzerland.

On the lips of the industry at the moment is the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) and how it will affect owners and how they run their yachts. Will Mathieson goes through some of the finer points and shows how, rather than an unnecessary inconvenience, the MLC is something to be embraced. Finally partner at Clyde & Co, John Leonida examines the various forms of the build contract and what happens when you, or the shipyard, are forced to terminate mid-build.
