Damen introduces M/Y 'Power Play'

We take a look at the new vessel and Damen's performance over the last five years…

Dutch shipbuilder, Damen has introduced its latest vessel to its burgeoning support vessel fleet. Named Power Play, the new 55.5m support vessel will be the sixth vessel in the shipyard’s popular YS 5009 series, bringing the total Damen fleet for this particular model up to 11 vessels, with a cumulative LOA of 628.8m.

“It’s inspiring to see how a new generation of owners are driving this market,” says product director, Mark Vermeulen. “It’s very dynamic – it’s not the conventional thinking about luxury yachting. Our clients have fantastic ideas for diving, aircraft, luxury toys and serious boats. They are planning adventures of a lifetime and even getting involved in underwater exploration, science, film-making or racing yacht events. As a shipbuilder, it’s exciting to be a part of making their ideas a reality.”

According to the shipyard, Power Play has been configured with a number of new features, qualifying it as an ‘adventure vessel’. These new features include a 50-square metre dive centre and facilities for operating in zero-discharge zones.

Damen is undoubtedly the leader in this niche superyacht sector as no other yard has delivered this number of support vessels. In fact, the data within The Superyacht Annual Report 2018: New Build shows that Damen, which is ranked the 24th most prolific shipyard, is the only shipyard building superyacht support vessels within the top 40 shipyard rankings, based on cumulative LOA delivered in the last five years.

Although Amels, a superyacht-specific subsidiary of the Damen Group, is actually responsible for a vast majority of the group’s superyacht activity, and is positioned as the ninth most active shipyard, according to the report’s criteria. Since 2013, Amels has delivered a total of 15 superyachts, with a cumulative LOA of 892.4m. If the units delivered by Amels are combined with that of Damen, since 2013, the Damen Group has delivered a total of 20 vessels to the superyacht fleet.

Power Play is currently scheduled for delivery this summer, bringing the Damen fleet up to a total of 12 superyachts. In 2018, the impressive levels of activity seen by the Damen Group as an entity are set to continue as Amels have a total of nine vessels under construction with a cumulative LOA of 603.3m.
