BMT Nigel Gee expands

UK, Southampton. BMT Nigel Gee has announced the completion of a six-month, £200,000 office refurbishment in Southampton to satisfy an increase in demand for design work. Following three years of healthy work proliferation, BMT has refurbished one of the previously derelict Camper & Nicholsons yacht stores adjacent to the current BMT premises, cementing room for further expansion. Operating across four principal market sectors, the naval architecture practice delivers design and engineering services for specialised vessels in the commercial, yacht, defence and offshore energy markets.

“Rising to the challenges that such diversity brings can be both demanding and rewarding,” comments John Bonafoux, managing director of BMT Nigel Gee. “Projects such as the engineering of a series of 42m articulated tug barges are helping us to further enhance our engineering and naval architecture expertise for another specialised vessel type.” New challenges require new expertise and over the last three years BMT has taken on 23 new employees to meet these challenges.

With 62 live projects, BMT has had a fast-paced start to 2015. Current contracts include; seven commercial vessels, 23 offshore energy projects, 21 specialised naval projects and 11 large yacht projects spanning three continents, 13 countries and a total length of 2,600m. Acting as a dedicated large-project office, the new premises provide space for teams working on similar projects to pool expertise and find innovative solutions. The new office currently includes three teams working on three superyacht projects over 100m.

“The outlook for the rest of 2015 remains both buoyant and full of further challenges,” says Bonafoux. “Throughout the year we will be continuing to deliver engineering to our exacting customer base, as well as developing new collaborations and exploring other markets.”
