Albemarle
Launched by Cole & Son at Maison et Objet 2012, the Albemarle collection is a selection of damask prints inspired by the Romantic Period...…
Named after an infamous bohemian private members club that was opened in London in 1874, only a year before Cole & Son was founded, the collection is designed to evoke the glamorous and poetic era of the Rococo period. Each of the nine designs references a cultural icon or gem of the time, such as Byron, Coleridge, Piccadilly, Blake, Wyndham and Aldwych. SuperyachtDesign was particularly enamoured by the gold leaf and feathered plumes of Baudelaire, the deep reds and golds of Blake and the opulent gilded peacocks of Byron.
“We selected a series of traditional damask prints from our vast archive, adapting the designs and colours and experimenting with different printing techniques to create a modern feel,” explains Simon Glendenning, managing director at Cole & Son. “The result is an elegant collection ideal for both heritage and contemporary settings the creativity of Albemarle is a homage to the rich artistic period from which it is inspired.”
The Cole & Son archive that the prints were developed from consists of approximately 1,800 block print designs, 350 screenprint designs and a huge quantity of original drawings and wallpapers, representing all the styles from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Amongst these are some of the most important historic wallpaper designs in the world. Along with new collections like Albemarle, the company is now the prime source for entirely authentic period wallpapers printed by the original method and has provided wallpapers for many historic houses, including Buckingham Palace and the White House.
