The 88m sailing yacht concept promises to offer the best of both worlds…

Royal Huisman has revealed preliminary details of its latest concept Lotus that, according to the yard, will “bridge the gap between the experience of sailing and the adventure of the motoryacht lifestyle”. The 88m dual-mast DynaRig sailing yacht concept has been created in conjunction with a 70m support vessel and seeks to imbue its owners with “life without compromise”.

Lotus, designed by the ThirtyC design studio in collaboration with DynaRig creators Dykstra Naval Architects and Royal Huisman, has reduced complexity in terms of both rigging and crew, as well as an engineering package that offers comfort and agility on the water.

“We have worked with Dykstra for many years and both strive to push the boundaries and envelope of this platform,” comments Rob Armstrong, creative director and co-founder of ThirtyC Design. “We will be taking this technology to the limit of what is possible. Huisman’s pedigree within this field is extensive, producing some of the world’s biggest and most technologically-advanced sailing yachts ever built. Working alongside their expertise and experience makes this collaboration a force to be reckoned with.”

The sailing-yacht market is still dominated by a handful of established sailing-yacht builders: the only yards that have delivered more than five sailing yachts over the past five years are Southern Wind, Royal Huisman and Baltic Yachts. In light of the declining market, sailing yacht builders need to find different ways to appeal to owners that would otherwise be attracted to the motoryacht lifestyle, and offering a support vessel alongside this concept is one way of doing this.

In the latest issue of The Superyacht Report, we look into the rise of the support vessel as a space increasing solution without compromising on efficiency or risking losing one’s spot in the marina. More information about the concept is expected to be released at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.
