Albany-based marine systems supplier Lusty & Blundell Ltd has overseen the installation and commissioning of the first active fin stabilisation at-anchor system in New Zealand. Naiad Dynamics’ innovative system, known as S@A, offers roll damping even when a vessel is at anchor or drifting.

Lusty & Blundell product manager Paul Bartley highlighted the ongoing problems S@A has tackled: “Being able to deliver effective stabilisation when a vessel is not making headway has been a persistent motion control problem.

“Naiad Dynamics is the first company in the world to find a way to successfully adapt and apply stabiliser fins to significantly reduce the roll of an anchored vessel,” added Bartley, who went on to highlight the many advantages delivered by the new system. “Comfort levels are greatly increased, crew fatigue is reduced, the vessel can maintain higher cruise speeds in rough conditions, and those on board generally enjoy a far more pleasant experience.”

Naiad Dynamics’ latest at-rest stabiliser system, now operating successfully in New Zealand on the vessel Pacific HQ, includes the company’s DATUM control system, one which uses refined propriety DATUM S@A control algorithms to create, according to Lusty & Blundell, the first fully proportional and automatic at-anchor fin control system.

“These exciting thing about these new Naiad stabiliser systems is that they really are as effective at rest or anchor as they are underway. That’s a real breakthrough,” commented Bartley.

The new stabiliser systems are available in New Zealand for vessels of 10m to 250m, and are also suitable for new vessels under construction as well as retro-fitting to existing vessels, either with or without conventional underway stabilisers.
