Mattresses on yachts can easily be overlooked and left way down the fit-out shopping list. However they are vitally important firstly because a decent mattress guarantees a good nights sleep and secondly because the climates within yachts place demands on mattresses which are different to those in a house. The bespoke nature of beds and their shapes on yachts makes having a mattress custom made seem logical.
"The advantages of having bespoke mattresses for both guest and crew areas is in essence because this way the right specification for the right application will be guaranteed" Peter Tindall from The Natural Mat Company advises SYD. "Guest berths can usually be thicker and more substantial to offer the highest level of luxurious comfort, and usually crew berths are used more frequently and are in more restricted spaces so we make a more suitable composition that provides both long lasting comfort and durability without producing a mattress that takes up too much of the precious space in crew accommodation. Each project will be slightly different as well and that is where having the expertise really counts for ensuring a good result."
SYD found that The Natural Mat Company's knowledge and understanding of life onboard and the different settings and usage of mattresses are well interpreted into mattress composition. Common issues such as ventilation are catered for with a variety of solutions both within the mattresses and in terms of layers to be placed between the base of the bed and the mattress. Combinations of natural fibres from renewable sources are used for resilience durability and comfort. The mattresses can be completely tailored to a yachts and clients requirements including making adjustments to the tension and feel.
