January’s Maison et Objet is the show to gauge the moods, trends and themes for the coming year. SYD went along to the 2012 edition of Paris’ famous furniture fair to see what this year would hold for some of the world’s top design houses. We discovered that while many designers have chosen to keep things understated, luxury is still clearly at the heart of many brands' collections.

Hall 7’s Scènes d'intérieur played host to some of the top luxury brands at the show. Italian glassmakers LU Murano had a breathtaking stand that showcased its chandeliers. Designed and realised by the master glass blower Fabio Fornasier, each chandelier is available in custom sizes and in more than 20 colours. Fornasier told SYD how he learned glass making in his father Luigi's glassworks factory when he was a boy and that each finished chandelier is a unique piece of contemporary design and art.

Many companies spoke of their recent and ongoing superyacht projects, with Fendi Casa telling us about its work with Princess Yachts, Benetti, San Lorenzo and Ferretti. Stepevi showed SYD images of the carpets it installed on Talisman C and Italian furniture house Visionnaire told us about a refit project that they are working on in the Pacific that is to remain nameless.

Luxury textile houses were out on force. Kohro, Chelsea Textiles and L’Atelier du Renard are just a couple of the names that SYD saw. Italian supplier of fine fabrics to superyachts and the high-end hotel industry, Loro Piana, unveiled its newest project, Passepartout. Its first dedicated hospitality collection, it features specially selected fireproof wools and cashmeres to be matched to the Trevira CS fabrics. There are 11 items available in 79 different colours.

Designers of striking baths and Maison et Objet veterans, Aquamass previewed their latest collection as designed by fashion designer Olivier Lapidus: the Black Tears Collection. Bold, modern and pieces that will be the focal point of any bathroom, the collection features bathtubs that are adorned with patterns that are representative of periods in fashion history: pois, pied-de-poule, bayardere and anneaux.

Across from Aquamass, THG, the world’s leading French brand for luxury bathroom fittings, displayed its vast collection of striking taps and shower fittings. “The January 2012 edition of Maison & Objet is definitely showing a mix of craftsmanship and creation,” Sophie Durand, head of the yacht division at THG Paris, told SYD. “Colours are everywhere and it seems to be the new trend are a reaction of the difficult economic context.” She pointed out the prevalence of natural materials such as wood, natural fibres, glass and recycled paper. “To cope with this increased demand THG has presented a new range of Waterworks designs with wooded handles,” she explained. THG newest launch at Maison & Objet was a Pierre-Yves Rochon design called Perle, which features Lalique crystal inserts inspired by the Honeymoon suite of the George V hotel in Paris.

Hall 8 was the home of Now! Design à Vivre, exhibiting the best of contemporary design and interiors. Among the up-and-coming designers, established luxury crystal brand Baccarat could also be found in Hall 8 this year. It launched a new collection of crystal glasses that should set a new standard for wine glasses on any superyacht. Château Baccarat is a collection aimed at enhancing the drinking experience for every palate by optimising the shape of the glasses to release full-bodied aromas while minimising alcohol, enabling the wine to gain subtlety without losing intensity. Featuring a wide, rounded concave base for heightening the effects of swirling the wine while drinking and a vertical chimney to showcase the wine’s complexity by reunifying and strengthening the aromas. The collection includes glasses for red, white and champagne as well as a decanter and two sizes of goblet.

Huge and frenetic, January 2012’s Maison et Objet was ultimately overwhelmingly positive. Companies were upbeat, exciting designer collaborations were everywhere and while trend forecasters around the globe may still be exploring how these tougher financial times are affecting and are going to affect the world of design, one thing is clear: the recessionary culture has not affected the desire for innovation and luxury. Good quality, design-forward pieces were everywhere.
