Frauscher's hybrid boats

Although the commercial launch of the Hybrid Propulsion System took place in January 2008, it was not until this year that the two models fitted with the hybrid propulsion technology were sold by Italian Frauscher partner, Cantiere Nautico Feltrinelli. The combination between Steyr Motors’ low emission, lightweight marine diesel engines with electronic engine management and Frauscher’s 80 years of building experience, has lead to a new line of greener boats.
“We see high potential in this market”, explains Stefan Frauscher of Frauscher Bootswerft. “Boat enthusiasts are getting more and more cautious regarding the environment and we can offer the perfect boat, which caters for all needs: elegance, fun and environmental friendliness.”
The Austria-based boat builder claims that the hybrid solution technology used on their boats “assures zero emission and low speed manoeuvring in harbours”, and eliminates the need for separate generator units for other onboard equipment. When using the electric engine solely, the boat can reach five knots and then switches to the combustion engine, which is then boosted by the electric drive to secure quicker acceleration into the planning phase, lowering fuel consumption.
The handling of the boat is improved by Steyr Motors Electronic Control Centre (SCC), which regulates all of the driver’s demands and assures convenient monitoring of all operating modes. “Significantly reduced maintenance cost and improved ease of service, due to the brushless permanent magnet generator, are further irrevocable arguments that Steyr Motors and Frauscher Boats are introducing a serious technological novelty”, says Frauscher.
