Many of the exhibitors and designers at Clerkenwell Design Week 2012 placed an emphasis on the creative and manufacturing processes behind the designs this year. One studio, Johnson Tiles (featured as a part of SYD’s Materialist on ceramics in Q8) displayed parts from the company’s actual factory in Stoke on Trent, including conveyor belts, ceramic rubble, hosing and pumps, taking visitors on a factory tour of its 100-year history. ‘Metamorphosis’ was the theme of their presentation, a theme that was mirrored in the demonstration of how the rubble is transformed into the tiles, as well as the designs on the tiles themselves.

The collection of Johnson Tiles’ finished pieces included some striking tiles, called Flutter, that have been digitally printed with vibrant butterflies — an insect that embodies the idea of transformation in its life cycle. These artisan tiles are hand made and feature a layered multi-coloured crackle glaze. The company also worked in collaboration with Jim Biddulph to create a unique bar installation for the Farmiloe Building’s courtyard. The ‘Mayfly Bar’ featured tiles with intricate mayfly illustrations printed by Johnson Tiles, which continued the metamorphosis theme in vibrant colours of mango, orange and teal. “Thanks to today’s techniques tiles are anything but plain – there’s no limit to creativity and our exhibition was designed to show just that – how any space can be transformed,” says Biddulph.

“Our theme this year is a reflection of just how far Johnson Tiles has come since 1901,” Darren Clanford, creative director at the company, says. According to Clanford, the company has itself truly transformed over the years to become one of the foremost names in tiles today. With Material Lab, Johnson Tiles researches, innovates and explores trends in the hopes of bringing designers the most unique and ground-breaking products.
