Inspired by the unique examples of American locksmith artisanship from the days of the Prohibition, German-based safe manufacturer Döttling has revealed its latest work, the Colosimo. Named after Chicago gangster, “Big Jim” Colosimo (1878-1920), the safe is based upon the impressive vaults used by US banks at the turn of the twentieth century, with huge round doors and highly complex locking mechanisms. These steel doors were fitted with radial bolts making any unauthorised entry virtually impossible.
On a scale of 1:13 and crafted from German stainless steel, the 27 cm cube-shaped Colosimo is the smallest safe in world and is the result of three years development, which the team at Döttling like to call “haute safeology”. “The highly decorative tabletop safe offers the external delight of simple lines, glossy finished steel surfaces, and a solid presence,” explains Managing Partner, Markus Döttling. “When the door of the Colosimo is opened – only after entering a three digit personal code, of course – the sight is particularly striking.”
Once open, the intricate locking mechanism is revealed, displaying the fine craftsmanship that has gone into its creation and mimicking the inner workings of a clock. Features of Colosimo include special armored protection, mineral glass to protect the safe mechanisms, 16 hardened radial locking bolts, 32 gold-plated precision gearwheels, a high-gloss lacquered black base and an optional mounting set for table or furniture tops. A Döttling precision watch winder and a cedar wood humidor with an integrated air humidifier are also offered to clients.
