Nordlund’s 115 (34.86m) sportfisher, under construction at its Tacoma, Washington yard, has an eye catching glass tint.

The metallic, blue tone tint is designed to complement the hull finish, Alexseal’s Dolphin Blue. The yacht’s Interior designer, Jonathan Quinn Barnett of JQB approached Glasshape, specialist in manufacture of the DuraShield Marine superyacht glass brand, to come up with the innovative product. It is a departure from the company's usual commissions:

“The majority of our projects have been grey-toned tints,” said Ian Gracey, USA Account Manager for Glasshape.

“Our most popular tint color is our Euro-Gray tint, which is a cooler tone and complements white hulls better. In terms of coloured glass, this is the first yacht to our knowledge in the market with colour tinted glass!”

The blue tint is created at the molten glass stage for durability

The glass is reflective on the outside and non-reflective on the inside. From the inside perspective the view is designed to look the same as standard tinted glass.

Glasshape has a bespoke approach to its glass fabrication, working directly with designer and the paint colours they want to use. The company makes the coloured glass by incorporating the chemistry of colouration at the molten glass or float glass phase. This is the best way of ensuring durability and protection from fading, particularly important in hard wearing marine applications, says the manufacturer. Other benefits cited include its no acrylic base interlayer, helping to prevent delamination.

“It will be interesting to see how the concept takes off. Designers have not easily had this option before,” said Gracey, who urged creative use of glass to be taken more seriously as part of a yacht's unique design.

“We like to offer creative ideas, such as logos in skylights, glass staircases…Glass is an overlooked area which offers a lot of ways to personalize a yacht.”

The Sportfisher featuring design by Tim Nolan Marine Design and R Edwin Monk Naval Architects has twin MTU 12V2000 M93 engines at 1323.9 kilowatts each. Her metallic blue hull and her superstructure are cored fiberglass
