AVIT Marine

AVIT Marine in Mallorca does what it says on the tin: they specialise in the distribution and installation of high-end audio-visual Information Technology for superyachts and luxury villas. As a taster for our feature article on AV in Q4 of SuperyachtDesign out in September, Neil Simmons of AVIT Marine responded to the following questions.


SYD: At what stage should the AV specialist be consulted during the design and/or build process?

NS: We would like to be involved in a new build or refit at the initial meeting between the owner, designer and shipyard. From our point of view, we are trying to achieve the highest audio-visual experience we can so it is vital to be able to request technical space for equipment and position speakers for optimum audio reproduction, rather than having to compromise at a later stage.

SYD: What issues do you come across during the installation of the entertainment systems?

NS: There are many: technical spaces being reduced by designers and shipyard to place other equipment or Class requirements; equipment cooling and dedicated A/C for AV equipment not thought about by designers; structural supports, ducting, pipework and cable trays being positioned in such a way that they obstruct the proposed positioning of speakers or lifts in ceiling voids.

SYD: Are we seeing a trend for more dedicated cinema spaces aboard large yachts?

NS: We are being asked more for ‘invisible’ TVs, projectors, screens and speakers in guest areas. We are also utilising more motorised units with either artworks or cabinetry work to hide the AV equipment. With the advances in media servers for both music and movies to enhance AV quality and the user experience, it is not always necessary to have a dedicated cinema room. We have been installing projectors and screens in the main lounge area with a large LCD, LED or plasma screen for everyday viewing.
