The yachtwerft meyer rhapsody
The owner of Amels' 65m 'Sea Rhapsody' entrusted captain Julian Cox and owner’s representative Nicholas Dean of Ocean Independence with the task of sourcing a suitable pair of tenders for the vessel.…
The design brief for the 7.6m limo and the eight-metre open tender was specific – drawing on Cox’s experience – and required simple yet modern boats. Among the criteria outlined by Cox was for the tenders to be fitted with easy and reliable operating systems. “Most of the time, an interested party will go to a tender yard with a concept by a well-known designer such as Patrick Banfield from Allseas Design. However, we have an in-house design team, naval architects and engineers capable of making great tenders, based on a proven semi-custom platform,” reveals Michaela Meyer, general manager at yachtwerft meyer. “I believe this is one of the reasons this particular client came back to us for the second yacht project, and Julian knew what he wanted and what makes for a good tender.”
The limo, like a Venetian water taxi, is boarded towards the bow and can accommodate a maximum of nine guests and two crew, and has a muted and functional interior. The seating is finished in light grey Ultraleather with black beading, with the same material on the ceiling with accented longitudinal head strips and spot down lighting. The option to use the Ultrafabric adheres to the requirement by the design brief for practicality, as this material is easier to clean and maintain, and tolerates moisture better than real leather. The salon also features teak flooring, black-tinted windows and carbon detailing throughout the cabin and around the cockpit.
“The limo tender is sleek and elegantly designed while still being generously spacious inside.” – Captain Julian Cox
The connection between the mothership and the tender is ensured by matching the colour of the exterior, as the limo features a black hull, charcoal grey waterline and white superstructure. “The limo tender is sleek and elegantly designed while still being generously spacious inside. It is a smooth drive and is highly manoeuvrable,” confirms Cox. Bespoke features such as the engraved name, which has been etched into the teak, welcome guests as they come on board towards the bow. This is repeated on the bathing platform towards the stern.
Two 180hp turbo diesel engines, connected to stern drives, achieve a top speed of 40 knots, which is more than enough for a boat of this size, and ensures good performance when fully loaded. “I am very happy with the quality of the tender and we have had no warranty issues to speak of, but this department is of a high standard and we feel well supported,” concludes Cox. “The end result is a beautifully designed, high-quality luxury limo that I am extremely happy with.”
