With so many yachts and crew all in one place for an extended period of time, the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) offers the perfect opportunity for crew to have some time on the dock, reflect on a busy summer season and look forward to the year ahead. While traditionally an owner-centric show, MYS has grown its offering to the crew sector over recent years. Now, not only can crew use the show to catch up with exhibitors on the latest developments in their respective departments, but there are a number of seminars, workshops and even awards dedicated to crew over the course of the week.

One of the longest-standing crew events at MYS is the Professional Yachting Association (PYA)’s Monaco Sea Changes Forum. Following the successful format of previous editions, this year a prominent panel of industry experts will be discussing and debating the most important and topical crew-related issues in yachting. As well as bringing attendees up to date with the latest changes in certification, regulation and training, the results of a PYA survey determining the extent of sexual harassment in yachting will be presented for the first time. With environmentalism another topical subject for 2018, the panel will also explore ways in which the whole industry can do their bit to make positive changes for the future of the planet. During the show, ACREW will once again be hosting the Crew Lounge at La Rascasse alongside International Marine Management (IMM). As well as providing a relaxed atmosphere for captains and crew to escape the hustle and bustle, a selection of superyacht businesses will be running social events and seminars throughout the show. The programme offers some valuable learning opportunities, and includes informative discussions on topics varying from the Caribbean winter season 2018/19, women in leadership, to whether green superyacht technology makes sense to owners. Before and during the Monaco Yacht Show, yacht crew are invited to join the PYA and Bluewater Yachting for an informal 'Crew Career Clinic' at La Belle Classe Academy at the Monaco Yacht Club. Over a glass of wine or coffee, crew will have an opportunity to talk to friendly experts on anything to do with their yachting career. The PYA will be on hand to talk through sea service, certificates, preparing for OOW certification, or any problems on board, while the Bluewater team, along with the instructors, will be able to advise on training requirements, career paths and job opportunities in yachting. With regards to exciting new products being launched at this year’s show, deck crew might be interested in the new platform that ChartCo will be promoting. ChartCo OneOcean claims to bring ChartCo to the forefront of navigation and compliance management both on board yachts as well as onshore. A notable new feature within the OneOcean platform is the incorporation of data from regulations database Regs4yachts. Now fully integrated into one platform, OneOcean offers a single point of reference for all the yacht’s passage planning, navigation and compliance management. 

On the tenders and toys side, one tender new on the market in 2018 that is sure to catch your eye at the show is the SEAir flying rib. Equipped with automatically adjusted and retractable foils, it offers a unique tender experience that is available to be tested at the show. FunAir will also be presenting new products to market at the show, such as Yacht Golf, Water Joust and the Floating Playground with Junior BigAir Blob.

On a more serious note, crew attending this year’s show may wish to catch up with a Nautilus Union representative. Considering the number of high-profile superyacht detentions this year that have left the yacht’s crew in a difficult situation either without pay or being interrogated by authorities, joining a maritime union is becoming an increasingly popular decision. Nautilus is staging drop-in sessions during the show at the ACREW lounge.

All in all, the MYS programme looks set to include a variety of different offerings for crew. So whether you want to use the show to further your knowledge or career, contribute to some interesting debates, get up to speed on the industry’s latest developments, network or just catch up with friends with a drink in your hand, there should be something for you to do next week in Monaco.
