"Caribbean vibe" shot wins crew photo competition

Michael Lewington, bosun on 61m M/Y Majestic, has had his photo chosen as the front cover of issue 76, after it went viral across social media. We speak to the crewmember and photographer.…

It’s reached over 23,000 people on Facebook, with 3,300 clicks and 1,200 likes, comments and shares. The moment this photo competition entry hit the world of social media it went viral, and for good reason.

Congratulations to bosun Michael Lewington, or ‘Lewy’, whose absolutely stunning self portrait (above) on board the 61m M/Y Majestic is the second winner of The Crew Report’s photo competition and, as such, will feature on the cover of issue 76 of The Crew Report.

The moment we received the photo the whole office was talking about it. Not only is the photo a brilliant representation of yachting and life as a crewmember, but the photographer’s description was equally so.

“That one was tricky,” he says, when I ask him how this photo came about. “It’s actually a bit of a selfie, which I don’t usually do. It’s taken from the sundeck, in Sint Maarten, overlooking the town.

“It was actually 1am. I came back from having walk. It was still as can be, no moon, which made it possible to capture the stars.”

We told Lewy he’d won the competition at what looks like just the right time. “That has made my day to be honest! We have arrived in Barcelona after eight weeks straight – a busy season. We have two more days to go, so getting into bed to spark the laptop up and read your email is quite humbling!

“The fact that The Crew Report is such a huge magazine and up to date in the yachting community is great for getting my photography out there. To be featured on the front cover is such a compliment. Thanks to The Crew Report for using this photo for the front page of a well-known magazine!”

We asked Lewy to sum up the photo for our readers and explain why he decided to take the shot. “This photo really sums up the Caribbean vibe: gentle, calm, balmy night, mountains in the background and the bustling party-goers below the stars shining bright. Sint Maarten is full of vibrant life so to capture it in a single shot, this really is one of my favourite pictures. I am not usually into 'selfies' but I thought getting involved in this one gave it some perspective.”

Congratulations Michael Lewington – it’s a great photo. And you can see it on the front cover of issue 76. (Pick up a copy at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.)

We are still looking for more winners for our 2016 covers, so send your high-res photos of what it's like to be a superyacht crewmember to photo@thecrewreport.com with a description of the photo and your name, position on board, yacht and email.
