Held in conjunction with La Belle Classe Superyachts, a group of owners and operators of 40m+ yachts, the event was chaired by YCM General Director, Bernard d’Alessandri and examined topics ranging from black water discharge and treatment, to client education and environmental certification schemes.
Oscar Siches, Manager of Pantalan del Mediterraneo marina, was in attendance and said of the event:
“I noticed two different flows of information: on one side, the representatives of government agencies and research institutions presenting the rules and the possible outcomes of the increase in pollution due to increased traffic and size; on the other, the yacht harbour directors, managers and developers presenting the facts and the requirements, whilst identifying possible bottlenecks and solutions. Such different approaches are nothing new, as this situation is enveloping much of the world, but what is required is closer collaboration and better understanding from both sides.”
To conclude the evening’s events, D'Alessandri requested a definition of the perfect, or ideal marina. Of the answers offered, he concurred with a vision for the future: a sustainable marina, one that can operate indefinitely without adversely affecting the environment.
Siches analysed the discussion thus: “Are we ready to sacrifice size and grandeur to enable a marina to be sustainable? Not yet, but these contributions contribute in the quest to find viable solutions to environmental degradation.”
