Underwater Lights USA has launched their latest line of underwater lighting: light emitting plasma (LEP).

Unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show this year, this solid state device combines qualities of metal halide and LED lighting and generates high frequency energy to excite a plasma light source.

Luxim originally developed the technology for streets, parking lots, and factories. It is a cost efficient light source that produces high intensity light and has been adapted by SeaVision for underwater lighting for large yachts.

By placing the bulb very close to the lens, a 140-degree beam can be achieved, as opposed to around 80 degrees for HIDs (High Intensity Discharge). As a result, fewer lights have to be used as the beam delivers an even distribution of lighting around the hull. The light is provided by a single source, unlike LEDs, which requires multiple diodes or metal halide where a large lamp source is required.

SeaVision claims that one LEP is equivalent to 2.5 x 150W HID bulbs or 150 x high power LEDs, but a super abundance of light is not always desirable.

“Bright isn’t always best because you then begin to see particles in water and light is scattered”, explains SeaVision CEO Ian MacDonald. “It’s all a question of combining volume of light, brightness and colour temperature to provide an appealing effect. The colour rendering index of the LEP is 80, which is much like what you find in high-end stores where it is calculated to make products look their best. As the boats have got bigger, we’ve had to produce more powerful lights and we have a 250W HID light. But this still works with reflectors and the quantity of light it throws out can appear dazzling.”

The lights have over 30,000 hours of life with an illumination of 23,000 lumens and a high source density of 115 lumens per watt. The lighting system is configured for use with a digital network, controlled onboard systems or analogue dimmers and can be dimmed to 20% of its full brightness.
