Issue 63 of The Crew Report is out and brings together a range of informative and hard-hitting features for crewmembers.

In this latest issue we acknowledge that the recent influx of new training facilities and courses coupled with an increased focus on professionalism in today’s industry means there is now more pressure on captains and owners to provide crew with attractive training packages. In our regular feature ‘Captains’ comments’, we pose the question to six captains about who should be paying for crew training and where should the time come from.

Issue 63 also includes an interview with Captain Ron Woods from busy charter yacht Mia Elise. We hear from Captain Ron Woods about his high standards of charter competition and how his crew meet the targets of superior service on board busy charter yacht Mia Elise. When charter clients come on board, they are buying into a service-based lifestyle, and Captain Woods explains how the ability of a crew to provide impeccable service is fundamental, especially when the charter client is a potential owner.

The New Zealand Millennium Cup 2013 saw some spectacular sailing racing and The Superyacht Group’s Pacific Editor, Ellie Brade, was in amongst the action to deliver an exciting account of the event to The Crew Report readers. Issue 63 brings together the results of the event, plus some interviews with the captains of these magnificent sailing yachts, with a special mention of first-time entrant 30m Zefiro whose crew took home the silverware.

Another significant date in the superyacht event calendar this year is The 34th America’s Cup; set to be held on San Francisco Bay in September 2013. With an increasing attendance of spectating superyachts there is heightened attention on the sustainability of the event. The Crew Report speaks to Jill Savery, head of sustainability for the America’s Cup Event Authority, to understand more about the voluntary superyacht sustainability programme that will be presented to participating captains.

With superyachts increasing in size and our industry becoming more and more regulated, the roles of the captains and senior crew are dramatically changing. Now not only concerned with operating their vessel safely, crew are faced with large amounts of paperwork and an increased pressure to manage a yacht as a sustainable financial asset. In its feature ‘Getting down to business’, Issue 63 discusses the idea that there is an increasing demand for crew to expand their skill set.

Getting the call that you’ll be on the new build team for an owner’s yacht is the pinnacle of the yachting career for many crewmembers, but it’s also a challenge and when entered into at full speed without a full understanding the delivery can become embedded in frustration, mistakes and even delays. This latest issue has put together its own new build team from the industry to provide crewmembers with the necessary understanding of each integral cog in the new build machine.

Issue 63 is packed with many more features covering topics that include how crew couples fare in the industry, an explanation of social security issues for crew once the MLC comes into force, the bullying that can take place amongst crewmembers, whether the industry could be doing more to train up our engineers and we also see some exciting new additions to the magazine.

Issue 63 of The Crew Report will be on its way to superyacht crew all over the globe this week. To view a copy of Issue 63 please click here. You can also pick up a copy of Issue 63 of The Crew Report at the Antibes Yacht Show at our stand VPC 1213.
